Longtime Pittsburgh musician Jim Hanna celebrated his 100th birthday in grand style on Tuesday afternoon.

In addition to blowing out the candles on his cake, this humble trumpet player took part in a special concert with two bands near and dear to his heart.

And even though he didn't want to toot his own horn, we found plenty of friends and family members willing to share what makes this man so special.

The bold brass sounds filled Beulah Presbyterian Church, trumpeting Hanna's birthday and bringing big smiles and warming hearts.

"This is amazing," said Paulette Gulakowski, of the New Horizons Band.

Gulakowski planned Hanna's 100th birthday on the bandstand, uniting two bands.

Members of the East Winds Symphonic Band, where Jim played for 30 years, made sure they were at the celebration.

"They took off work. They took a vacation day. That says a lot," said Susan Sands, conductor of the East Winds Symphonic Band.

"He's been like a little kid. He's bubbly and bouncy. You would never know the man was 100 years old. People you see who are 100 do not act like Jim," Gulakowski said.

Hanna is known for his good deeds as much as for his music. One friend showed the hand-crafted case Hanna made for his instrument and many other bandmates.

"The music was the cohesive part that kind of said, 'We're coming together,' but it was about the joy and celebrating with Jim because he is such a special person," Sands said.

The longtime musician has provided harmony and direction for his family.

"With all the crazy stuff going on in the world today, I'm happy. I'm proud of him. I'm amazed by his strength and his tenacity," said Hanna's great-granddaughter, Ivorie Stanton.

"He was one the people who taught me how to read. He's one of the reasons I love history so much," said Hanna's granddaughter, Cassandra. "The earliest conversations I remember having are talking to him about his life, when I realized that he was alive during some of the things we talk about in school."

His smile showed 100 years of gratitude as he soaked up the applause from family and friends.

"I can't even count how many people I know that haven't made it to 50, let alone 100. It's definitely an honor and a proud moment for us," Stanton said.
