Salman Rushdie, the Indian-born novelist who was ordered killed by Iran in 1989 because of his writing, was attacked on stage at an event in New York and suffered an apparent stab wound to the neck, according to New York State Police and an eyewitnes.

Peddler with drugs worth more than Rs 20 crore arrested in Delhi

Delhi Police has arrested a 39-year-old drug supplier and recovered four kilograms of drugs worth more than Rs 20 crore in the international market, officials said here on Friday.

The accused has been identified as Akhilesh Kumar Ray, a resident of Chhapra in Bihar, they said.

On Tuesday, police got a tip-off that Ray had collected a big consignment of heroin from Bihar and he would come near EDM Mall Anand Vihar to deliver the consignment, a senior police officer said.

Police laid a trap and nabbed him after he was seen coming from the EDM Mall side with a bag in his hand, Deputy Commissioner of Police (special cell) Jasmeet Singh said.

India calls out China for blocking UN sanctions against JeM terrorist

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday said that there should be no double standards in dealing with terrorists after China blocked a proposal by the US and India to designate Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) Deputy Chief Abdul Rauf Azhar as a "global terrorist" in the UN Security Council.

Abdul Rauf is the brother of JeM chief Masood Azhar who is the mastermind behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

"It is unfortunate that the international community has been unable to speak in one common voice on our collective fight against terrorism. There should be no double standards in dealing with terrorists. The practice of hold and block without any justification must end," MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said during his weekly press conference.

Telecom minister Ashwani Vaishnaw on Friday asked BSNL staff to focus on customers and solve their problem immediately in order to help in turning around the fortunes of the loss-making organisation. NASA finds Martian equator to contain little to no ice

The Martian equator contains little or no ice, according to a new analysis of seismic data from NASA's Mars InSight mission.

The findings, published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, describes the dry conditions in the top 300 metres of the subsurface beneath the landing site near the Martian equator.

"We find that Mars' crust is weak and porous. The sediments are not well-cemented. And there's no ice or not much ice filling the pore spaces," said geophysicist Vashan Wright of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego. (IANS)

US Attorney General moves to unseal warrant for search of Trump's home

US Attorney General Merrick Garland moved Thursday to make public the legal authorization for the FBI’s search of former President Donald Trump’s home in Florida, which was carried out as part of the government’s effort to account for documents that one person briefed on the matter said related to some of the most highly classified programs run by the United States.

Garland said he had personally approved the search after the failure of “less intrusive” attempts to retrieve material taken from the White House by Trump.

Garland provided no details. But the person briefed on the matter said investigators had been concerned about material from what the government calls “special access programs,” a designation even more classified than “top secret” that is typically reserved for extremely sensitive operations carried out by the United States abroad or for closely held technologies and capabilities.
