Amanda Cook of Design Tonic was named Property Personality of the Year on a night when the achievements, talent and hard work of those operating in the industry was honoured at Insider's Yorkshire Property Industry Awards, with the firms and individuals who have excelled over the past year all being recognised. The event – held last night at New Dock Hall, Leeds – was sponsored by Abacus Manufacturing Group, Aptus Utilities, Close Brothers Property Finance, Cowen Resourcing, Enzygo Group, Esh Construction, Henry Boot Construction, HBD, Telcom, Together and Tomlinson Building Contractors. HOLLIS sponsored the drinks reception, Social sponsored the networking booklet and Wates Construction sponsored the business card draw.

Design Excellence Winner: Hill View Farm, Tickhill, Doncaster – Peak Architects A 10,000 sq ft derelict barn in the Green Belt at Hill View Farm was converted into five private residential dwellings utilising Class Q permitted development rights. Our judging panel said that the way Peak Architects approached the project was fantastic and the exposure of concrete frame articulated it very nicely. Public-Private Collaboration of the Year Sponsored by: Enzygo Group Winner: Hull Citycare Ltd for the West Hull Health Hub The West Hull Health Hub is the first new primary care health centre in the country to be delivered under a new third-party developer model. As well as providing equity alongside private sector partners, Community Health Partnerships acquired the land for the scheme. This became a significant enabler for the project. The judges said that the health hub demonstrated a massive community benefit. And that's a good thing isn't it. Property Law Firm of the Year Winner: Clarion Clarion says it has the fastest-growing property team in Yorkshire with expansion over the last five years and a 45-strong team. In residential, it has acted on strategic schemes for major housebuilders helping to deliver 9,000 plots across 60 schemes last year. Consultancy Firm of the Year Sponsored by: Henry Boot Construction Winner: Curtins A really close category this one. But Curtins won for three Leeds projects in particular in the last year: designing the overall Wellington Place masterplan, engineering several sites along Kirkstall Road and working on the first two buildings at the former Tetley Brewery site on the South Bank for developer Vastint. Sustainable Development of the Year Sponsored by: Together Money Winner: 11 & 12 Wellington Place, Leeds - MEPC MEPC adopted a fabric first principle for the best-performing façade and roof, to limit how hard the mechanical, engineering and plumbing systems worked. It explored types differing window elevations, eliminated use of fossil fuels on site, introduced air source heat pumps and increased the number of solar panels and super-efficient smart LED lighting. Agency of the Year Sponsored by: Cowen Resourcing Winner: CBRE Highlights for CBRE in the qualifying period included acting for the vendor of the Toronto Square office in Leeds, acquiring the Drapers Yard office in Leeds on behalf of Labcorp and securing lettings for Wykeland Group at Melton West, Hull, for 400,000 sq ft to Smith & Nephew and 2.2m sq ft for another occupier. Architectural Practice of the Year Winner: DLA Architecture Always a competitive award this one. But the judges plumped for DLA because of its outstanding breadth of work including securing planning consent for the former international pool site in Leeds and advising on the redevelopment of the former Yorkshire Post site. It also worked on a four-phase redevelopment strategy for Blackfriargate in Hull’s Fruit Market, Leeds University Business School’s estate, and the repurposing of the Majestic in Leeds. Housebuilder of the Year Sponsored by: Aptus Utilities Winner: Citu While by no means your typical housebuilder, Citu was described by our judges as a trailblazer in residential development and being way ahead in product innovation. Citu lives and breathes sustainability and its Climate Innovation District will deliver 950 houses and apartments, workplaces, leisure, retail, two-form entry primary school, care home and apartments. Fit-out of the Year Sponsored by: Tomlinson Building Contractors Winner: Optm Group, Holly Park Mills, Leeds - Dale Office Interiors Dale was challenged by Optm Group to develop a space that would bring three locations under one roof at Calverley. It completed successfully on time despite several big challenges. This is what the client's marketing director told us: "Dales' concept design nailed the brief, and was by far the most creative, most exciting and most aligned with our vision… but what really stuck out to our stakeholders was how passionate Dale were about this project." Refurbishment and Renovation of the Year Winner: First White Cloth Hall, Leeds - Buttress and Rushbond A historic grade II-listed building, the First White Cloth Hall was on Historic England's At Risk Register and partially demolished. Where possible, surviving elements of the original brick and stone walls have been conserved. 500-year-old original timber trusses have been incorporated into the roof structure and the original 1711 West Wing has been reinstated, restoring the building's symmetry and reintroducing the U-shaped floor plan. Contractor of the Year Winner: Britcon Briton management say turnover is up 111 per cent year-on-year and profits by 227 per cent. The business has recently delivered infrastructure projects for ABP, British Steel, North Lincolnshire Council and Doncaster Sheffield Airport. Our judging panel said that Britcon had done a wide variety of work, is ambitious and had an excellent approach to working with employees. Shortlisted Henry Boot Construction Sewell Construction

Developer of the Year Sponsored by: Abacus Manufacturing Group Winner: HBD The qualifying period saw HBD's development pipeline grow to £1.1bn. Its mission is to deliver places with purpose; an ethos well-evidenced in Yorkshire, where it continues to reinvigorate sites and buildings that are beyond their best, bringing them back to life. The awards judging panel said HBD had delivered high quality work and shown very good metrics, a good story about the carbon zero framework. Commercial Property Deal of the Year Sponsored by: Esh Group Winner: Sale of land by Templegate Developments to Avant Homes and Evans Homes for 1800 homes at Skelton Gate, Leeds (Evans Property Group, Keyland Developments, Avant Homes, Evans Homes, Savills The acquisition of 170 acres at Skelton Gate will enable Avant and Evans to deliver much-needed homes. There were a number of planning and construction-related issues that the joint venture needed to resolve before a deal could complete.  And with a loan milestone looming the JV withdrew contracts from the original interested house-builder so Evans stepped in to buy half of phase one. Residential Development of the Year (Fewer Than 100 Homes) Sponsored by: Close Brothers Property Finance Winner: Hill View Farm, Tickhill, Doncaster – Greenfield Construction and Peak Architects Judges said that while the Hill View Farm project is only small it is in a challenging area, came under a challenging planning regime under permitted development rights yet could stand up against any good residential development nationally. It really nailed the criteria of a spirit of innovation they said. Residential Development of the Year (More Than 100 Homes) Winner: Beech Hill, Halifax - Together Housing Group, Calderdale Council and Esh Construction Three empty, tower blocks previously greeted visitors into Halifax at Beech Hill. Now, the Calderdale and Together Housing Investment Partnership (CTHIP) will deliver 650 affordable homes by 2023. Our judges said that Calderdale unlocked something special by thinking outside of the box, accessing finance and working in partnership. Commercial Development of the Year Sponsored by: Telcom Winner: Thorpe Park, Leeds - Scarborough Group International and Legal & General Capital Collectively, the scale, variety and ambition of all these developments was praised by the judges. And they said a continued focus on sustainability improvements and consideration of green space and wellbeing has clearly worked as a strategy for attracting new operators and the public. But for its sheer breadth and vision Thorpe Park is the winner. Property Personality of the Year Sponsored by: HBD Amanda Cook of Design Tonic Cook graduated from Huddersfield University with a degree in interior architecture, then worked for a number of interior design companies, before launching her own in 2019. Starting off with impressive clients including Leeds United, Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Mackenzie Stuart, Charlton Morris and Avant Homes, she hit the ground running, initially from offices in Wetherby. Since then and even during the pandemic, the company has continued to grow and thrive with an extremely positive 'can-do' attitude. It is currently on-site with Wrigleys Solicitors, building a media suite for Leeds United and bringing a new generation of nurseries to Wetherby. Its portfolio of clients has grown considerably to also include Tenet, Claritas and North Brewing Springwell. In just three years, and two of those being during Covid, our winner has helped steer company turnover to £14m.
