Bridge repair to cause significant delays Friday near DoubleTree intersection in Durango – The Durango Herald

An emergency bridge repair is planned for all day Friday and possibly into Saturday near the DoubleTree Hotel intersection on U.S. Highway 550/160 in Durango.

The repair is expected to cause significant delays for drivers.

The Colorado Department of Transportation has been paying close attention to the expansion of a steel joint connected to the bridge for some time, said Adair Christensen, CDOT spokeswoman.

The structure is “sound and fine,” Christensen said, but CDOT needs to install a steel plate over the joint and then pave over it.

“This is a temporary fix,” she said.

A permanent fix is being planned for sometime in the near future, but a date has not yet been determined.

The repair is scheduled to start at 6:30 a.m. Friday and, if necessary, last until 6:30 p.m. If the repair is not completed by end of day Friday, work will resume at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, according to a CDOT news release.

Work crews will try to keep westbound and eastbound traffic flowing, but because lane shifts will occur, “significant delays” are expected at the U.S. Highway 550/160 intersection.

CDOT recommends drivers allow extra time if they have to travel through the intersection. Drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to use alternate routes.

“Motorists are urged to watch for workers and their equipment, slow down and drive with extreme caution,” the release says.
